What to Check When Using Public Transportation in Korea for the First Time
Understanding public transportation in Korea can help you plan your day’s route more calmly. Subways and buses are commonly used ways to get around within cities, but route names, directions, and where to get off can be difficult to interpret on the spot. Before using them for the first time, it is best not only to save your destination name but also to check your starting point, destination, transfer points, and estimated travel time.
It is safer to prepare for your trip while still at your accommodation. After searching for your destination in a map app or transit guide screen, check whether there are any stations or stops with similar names. Even within the same area, exit numbers, stops across the street, and platforms in the opposite direction may be separate. Keeping screenshots makes it easier to check again when your data connection is weak or the signal inside a station is unstable.
When using the subway, make a habit of checking the direction and final destination display as well as the line color. Before entering the platform, confirm on the signs that you are heading in the right direction, and if you need to transfer, count in advance how many stops later you should get off. At stations with multiple exits, the exit closest to your destination can reduce travel time, so it is a good idea to check the exit number again before leaving the fare gates.
For buses, pay special attention to the stop location and direction of travel. Stops with the same name may be located on both sides of the road, and even if the route number is the same, taking the wrong direction can take you farther from your destination. Before boarding, compare the number and direction again on the information screen or bus stop sign. When your stop is getting close, get ready in advance, and if you have a lot of luggage, it is better to start checking your surroundings one stop early so you do not have to move in a rush.
Payment methods can feel different depending on the region, mode of transportation, and type of card, so you should check on site. If you plan to use a transportation card or mobile payment, find out in advance whether it can be used and how to check the balance or add funds. It is safer not to assume that overseas payment cards will always work the same way. If payment fails right before boarding, it can hold up passengers behind you, so it is best to test it first when you have time to spare.
When using public transportation, it is more important to leave room to recover if you make a mistake than to find the fastest route. On your first day or on a day with an appointment, an easy-to-understand route may be more comfortable than one with too many transfers. Last train or bus times, service intervals, temporary changes, and the locations of escalators or elevators can always change, so check again right before departure. If you get lost, rather than continuing on forcefully, replan your route based on the name of your current station or stop.
